EDITING - BEFORE AND AFTER

Writer: Hannah HurdleHannah Hurdle

One question that I often get asked after a photoshoot, whether it be for landscape or family photography is "how will you edit the photos?" so, I thought I would write a post demonstrating how I edit with two landscape examples as well as two portraiture examples.

Landscape and day in the life/family photography are the two styles that I shoot most often and as you will see, my editing styles are very different for the two. I use Lightroom to edit my photography as I have found that this works best for me but there are many other programs available!

I typically take my landscape images either at sunrise or sunset, therefore when editing I like to make the images quite vibrant to make the colours the centre of attention. I take my images in a long exposure style so I always sharpen the 'still' objects in the photo to exaggerate the movement of the water since that is always the moving component in my landscape photography.

When it comes to editing a day in the life/family image, I stick to a completely different set of rules. I want the focus to be on the expression/emotion or mood of the subject therefore I put all of the photos from the shoot in black and white, this draws the attention away from the background and all the colour in the original photo and puts it onto the people/person in the image, I also tend to crop the images in close for the same purpose.

This is a quote by Ted Grant that sums this up perfectly : "When you photograph people in colour you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in B&W, you photograph their souls".
