Candid: taken informally, especially without the subjects knowledge
Posed: assume a particular position in order to be photographed
Whilst in sixth form I experimented with many different styles of photography, but I found that with every shoot I did, whether it was planned or not, there was some element of candid photography. It was during this course that I realised I much prefer unposed images, specifically for family photography. It is not awkward or fake and gives a much more realistic account of family life, plus if there are small children it is an easy way to ensure you capture them when they're smiling!
Candid photography allows me to capture small moments that you just wouldn't get from posed shoots, it's these shots that are often more appreciated. Below is an example of this!

While posed photography gets everyone looking in the same direction it doesn't capture the special moments which I personally feel are way worth documenting !
Often when trying to take posed images of siblings in particular it is hard to get them to cooperate and be 'cute' for the camera, but when they don't know or forget they are being photographed it is easy to capture them interacting naturally, another reason why I think candid images are the way forward for family photography.

Day in the life photography allows me to blend into the background of your everyday life and capture the best (and worst) moments of your day, the photos are real and cannot be planned which is all part of the fun!
